The certified record is titled “the largest number of humanoid robots dancing simultaneously”. All the dancers were Yuanzheng A3 robots, adult-sized humanoids. The information comes from the newspaper Qilu Evening News and was picked up by the website IT之家.

A Guinness World Records judge was present. The judge handed over the official certificate and confirmed the final figure of 110 robots.

To make the 110 machines move in time and change formation, the company used its group control platform LinkBots and a radio positioning system accurate to the centimetre. According to IT之家, these production robots passed certification without a single error.

According to 智元, its robots are already being tested in Jinan metro stations, including those at the Olympic centre and Zhuanshan Xilu. There they give information and directions to passengers, help manage crowds and present the city's culture.

Also according to the company, the robots that danced will then be rolled out gradually in tourist shows, public services, research and education.

Update of 25 October: Wang Peng, an associate researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, played down the significance of the record in comments to Global Times. According to him, changing lighting, the type of floor or unexpected obstacles can disrupt robots, and small errors can add up over a long task. He also believes that coordination between robots and sharing the experience accumulated in service could help reduce the operating cost of each machine.
