# Tesla seeks patent for tactile robot “skin”, printed flat then moulded onto fingers

> A Tesla patent application published on 8 October in the United States describes a covering that can sense touch and pressure on robot hands, Robotics & Automation News reports.

The sensors are first printed flat on flexible materials, then heated to take a three-dimensional shape, according to the document filed by Tesla.

The sensor stacks two flexible layers carrying conductive areas, separated by a compressible layer. Each point where these areas cross becomes a measuring point that reacts to pressure.

Tesla relies on proven manufacturing techniques: screen printing, laser cutting, conductive paste deposition and thermoforming. According to Robotics & Automation News, they could allow these tactile surfaces to be produced in large volumes.

The patent application does not say this skin will equip Optimus, Tesla's humanoid. It lists fingertips, the palm and tools mounted on the ends of robot arms among possible uses.
