In China, a robot dog serves as a pack mule for forest researchers and even films gibbons
According to the Global Times, as picked up by Futurism, a DEEP Robotics Lynx M20S accompanied a biodiversity research team in the Ailaoshan mountains in China, during an expedition by the China Association for Scientific Expedition.
In photos from the expedition, the researchers have the robot carry their field and filming equipment. According to the information reported, it was also used to scout routes, record images and collect data.
The team even used it to film a rare parasitic plant, Monotropa uniflora, as well as gibbons. Futurism points out that a scientist could probably have done the same.
The robot can carry about 220 pounds, but its battery life is no more than 2.5 to 3.5 hours. According to Futurism, the researchers may therefore have to carry spare batteries up the mountain or find a way to recharge on site.
The massif has a reputation for being dangerous, with ravines, dense primary forest and violent rain. In 2021, a sudden change in the weather there killed four experienced geologists.
