In South Korea, a free autonomous bus takes travellers on trial from a KTX station to a cave

Since 7 October, Autonomous a2z has been running a trial autonomous bus between two stations and a cave in Gwangmyeong, in Gyeonggi province.

The ride is free until the end of the year, Robot Newspaper (로봇신문) reports.

The bus runs from Wednesday to Sunday, excluding public holidays, with 2 round trips a day.

The service relies on a single vehicle, a Hyundai County EV electric bus fitted out by the company, which can carry 14 passengers.

The bus is not left on its own: a safety driver takes over if anything unexpected happens, and a staff member accompanies passengers to help them board and answer their questions.

Lidars mounted at the roadside, at junctions along the route, detect pedestrians and send the information to the bus, the company says.
