The robot does not fire rigid shells. It launches soft capsules. Each holds about 10 gallons of liquid: water or a retardant product.

The capsules do not burst on hitting the ground. A mechanism triggers them slightly above it, to soak a precise area such as a roof or a strip of land.

The system fires without waiting for a human order. The customer and firefighters can nonetheless stop it remotely, says Gadi Benjamini, co-founder and CEO of FireDome.

The test site in Yuba County is used to demonstrate the system to several fire services, the company says.
