Degrees of freedom
- In French:
- Degrés de liberté

Definition
The number of independent parameters needed to describe the position of a robot completely. A free rigid object in space has six: three for its position and three for its orientation. For a robot, it is calculated from its joints: an arm with six rotary joints in series has six degrees of freedom, the minimum needed to give its tool any position and orientation within its workspace.
