The Guangdong government has announced a “world basketball tournament for humanoid robots”, shortened to RBA. According to Robot Newspaper, which relies on the Chinese outlet Pengpai, the competition will take place in Guangzhou in April next year.
The competition part has 5 events: free throws, moving 3-point shots, passes and catches between a human and a robot, stationary dribbling and dribbling around obstacles. A demonstration section also lets robots string together moves and positioning freely, with no set course.
In the competition, robots must have a fully humanoid body and walk on 2 legs. In the demonstration, only the upper body needs to be humanoid.
Each robot must also carry a controller to take back control when needed, and an emergency stop button.
The tournament is open to teams from around the world. One organisation can enter up to 3 teams of no more than 5 members. In the competition, each team can field two robots, while in the demonstration their number is not limited.
