OpenAI will build its own humanoids, Sam Altman expects a “remarkable” demonstration in 2027

Asked whether OpenAI would build humanoid robots itself, chief executive Sam Altman answered “we will”, according to the Chinese site IT之家.

Why a human form? On the Sources podcast, Sam Altman says that “the world itself was designed for humans”. Doors, keyboards and tools are made for a human body, so a robot working in the same places has good reason to resemble one.

The robot's appearance interests him little, however. In his view, such questions matter “far less than developing the ‘brain’ that makes the robot work”.

Speaking to Fortune magazine, Sam Altman says he expects a remarkable demonstration in 2027. He adds that it will be several more years before robots reach the street. According to IT之家, OpenAI has not said what the demonstration will show, or what the robot will look like.

Hardware has not been neglected, though. According to OpenAI's job advertisements, the team designs its own actuators, which combine motors, transmission, sensors and heat management.

OpenAI has yet to show any physical robot, but its recruitment page still lists 27 open robotics positions.
