Un chien robot boucle un marathon en 4 heures et 19 minutes sans jamais recharger sa batterie
RAIBO2, a four-legged robot designed at KAIST, ran the Sangju marathon in South Korea on one battery charge, according to a study published in Nature and relayed by TechXplore.
A KAIST team entered its four-legged robot, RAIBO2, in the Sangju marathon in South Korea (Corée du Sud), among human runners. It crossed the finish line in 4 hours and 19 minutes, without ever recharging its battery.
The course was no stroll: a route reputed to be difficult, with 286 metres of elevation change and slippery sections.
According to the authors, it is the first quadruped robot to use less energy than a human to get around, once body weight is taken into account. They also estimate that, with what was left in its battery, the robot could have run another 25 kilometres.
Until now, four-legged robots have struggled to go much beyond about 20 kilometres because of limited battery life. Unlike wheeled robots, they spend energy constantly just to carry their own weight.
Jemin Hwangbo and his colleagues present the work in the journal Nature, TechXplore reports. To save energy, RAIBO2 combines light legs, optimised motor control circuits and movement rules strengthened by machine learning.
