110 Wisconsin students are building a humanoid, aiming to walk down a corridor by May 2027

The Wisconsin Humanoid Robotics student group is starting to build a bipedal robot designed by its members, the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced.

The team wants to see its robot walk down a campus corridor by May 2027. For now, walking is the only immediate technical goal.

According to the engineering school, the robot, named Sconnie, is to stand 4 feet tall and will be made mostly of aluminium.

The project involves about 110 students, split into 17 sub-teams.

The mechanical teams will machine most of the robot and 3D print some parts in a workshop at the school.

If Sconnie walks, the team's leaders plan later versions able to fold laundry or use tools, and possibly to take part in humanoid competitions. “Walking is a step, not the final goal,” says Grant Gao, the student who started the project.
