At Tesla, a robot to charge the robots: Optimus learns to plug in driverless taxis

In an interview with Munro Live, Lars Moravy and Eric Earley, Tesla's engineering leads, described the first job planned for the Optimus humanoid, according to the Chinese site MyDrivers (快科技).

According to them, Optimus is learning to charge autonomous taxis. In the short term, it is expected to plug the charging connector into vehicles in the Robotaxi fleet.

The Optimus battery is a standalone module of about 2.5 kWh, according to the two engineers. In a car, the battery accounts for a quarter to a third of the vehicle's cost. That is not the case for the robot, where it is not the main cost item.

Charging would be only a start. According to Lars Moravy, the robot could then take on vehicle maintenance, and even move into delivery.

The interview also shed light on the Cybercab assembly line. It has about 25 fully automated stations, five to ten times fewer than the Model Y line, and its automation rate is close to 80%.

The line currently produces faster than the Robotaxi fleet is being deployed, so it does not run every day, MyDrivers reports.
