Before selling it in 2027, Xpeng wants to make its Iron humanoid a greeter
On the sidelines of a Forbes conference in Singapore, Brian Gu, vice chairman and president of Xpeng, told Forbes Asia about the first planned jobs for the Iron robot.
According to Brian Gu, robots should start working alongside Xpeng's sales staff as assistants early next year. He also imagines a receptionist robot that would welcome visitors at the group's headquarters in Guangzhou.
The carmaker plans to start selling Iron in the second half of 2027, after testing it in its own stores and offices. According to Brian Gu, mass production is scheduled to begin this year, ahead of the sales launch.
Iron runs on the Turing chip, designed by Xpeng. Brian Gu says its latest version almost rivals Nvidia's Thor chip. That is his own assessment: the article gives no test result to support it.
The executive was speaking on the sidelines of the Forbes Global CEO Conference, held on 7 and 8 October in Singapore.
Update of 15 October: According to Brian Gu, Xpeng moved into robotics about ten years ago. The group stepped up this activity in 2021 by buying a start-up, now called Dogotix. He explains that Xpeng designs its own chips to control costs, ensure software compatibility and secure its supplies.
