Brushless DC motor
- In French:
- Moteur sans balais
- Abbreviation:
- BLDC
Definition
An electric direct-current motor whose commutation, which energises the windings in the right order, is done electronically rather than by brushes rubbing on a commutator. The rotor carries permanent magnets, and the electronics must know its position, through Hall-effect sensors or an estimate, to drive the motor. With no brushes to wear out, it needs less maintenance and lasts longer than a brushed motor.
