Gear reducer (gearbox)
- In French:
- Réducteur
Definition
A transmission placed between a motor and the load, which lowers the rotation speed and multiplies the torque in the same ratio, losses aside. An electric motor of suitable power generally turns too fast to drive a joint directly, which has to move slowly with a lot of force. In return, the gearbox adds friction and often backlash.
