Encoder

In French:
Codeur (encodeur)

Definition

A sensor that turns a movement, usually the rotation of a shaft, into an electrical signal that a machine’s controller can read. An incremental encoder emits pulses at each fraction of a turn and only gives a position from a reference point, whereas an absolute encoder provides a unique code for each position, known as soon as power is switched on. Fitted on motors or wheels, encoders measure the position of joints and are used for odometry.
