According to Tesla, the robots coming off this line are the first to reach mass-production quality. The company says it has reached a level compatible with commercial production.

However, Elon Musk, its CEO, said on the third-quarter 2026 earnings call that the design still had to be partly modified to ensure the robot's safety and reliability. He does not want a product that breaks down or wears out after a month.

Elon Musk estimates it will take at least a year to raise the Fremont rate to twenty thousand Optimus a week. He expects the first deliveries to customers from late 2027.

According to Robot Newspaper, building a robotic hand able to handle objects as finely as a human hand remains one of the main technical challenges.

If the schedule holds, Elon Musk plans to fit the AI5 chip to Optimus around April 2027. According to him, its computing power would be about 10 times that of the current AI4.
